Maps of the Victoria period show mile stones in numerous locations across the isle of Wight. Unfortunately, over the years, probably due to road widening etc., most of these mile stones have been lost.
A lot of milestones were also lost at the beginning of World War 2 when they were deliberately buried or removed to avoid helping any invading force should they arrive.
