In 1936 the Theatre Royal was one of cinemas operated by the Isle of Wight Theatres, Ltd.[1]

The building was destroyed by fire despite the efforts of firemen attending from Newport, East Cowes and Bembridge as well as the local Ryde station on 19th May 1961[2].

After being left as ruins for many years, they were demolished and a branch of the National Provincial Bank (2019 NatWest) was built on the site.
