Borough, Urban and Rural District Councils - 1894-1974

From Wightpedia

The Local Government Act of 1894 resulted in establishment of Borough, Urban and Rural District Councils in the Isle of Wight. Many of these had been preceded by Town Improvement Commissioners or by Local Boards of Health.

The Local Government Act of 1933 further rearranged the Councils.

  • Isle of Wight Rural District Council (reduced in 1933 when part was included in the newly formed Sandown & Shanklin Urban District Council)
  • Ryde Borough Council
  • Cowes Urban District Council
  • East Cowes Urban District Council (merged with Cowes UDC in 1933)
  • St Helens Urban District Council (merged with Ryde Borough Council in 1933)
  • Sandown Urban District Council (merged with Shanklin Urban District Council in 1933)
  • Shanklin Urban District Council (merged with Sandown Urban District Council in 1933)
  • Ventnor Urban District Council

These councils ceased to exist in 1974 following the establishment of the Medina and South Wight Borough Councils.
