Medina & South Wight Borough Councils - 1974-1995

In 1974 the network of Borough, Rural and Urban District Councils in the Isle of Wight was replaced by two larger authorities:

• Medina Council comprised the former Cowes Urban District Council, Newport Borough Council and Ryde Borough Council;

and

• South Wight Borough Council covered the rest of the Island

In 1995 a Unitary Authority, the Isle of Wight Council, was formed to combine the responsibilities of these two councils and the Isle of Wight County Council.
