From Wightpedia

On the morning of 20th November 1947, an Anson aircraft operated by British Air Transport on a daily newspapers flight from Croydon to Jersey, and flying in fog, struck one of the 360ft radar masts on St. Boniface Down, above Ventnor, causing the aircraft to crash. The first people on the scene were personnel from the RAF station who found the two members of the crew lying dead among the wreckage.[1]
