St Mark's Church, Wootton

St Mark's Church on Station Road, (previously Beech Lane) Wootton was built in 1909 to replace the St Michael's & All Angels' Mission Church, on Wootton Common. The land for the new church was provided by Miss Shedden of Wootton House, and the church was designed by Percy Stone, F.R.I.B.A., the builder was E. W. Jenkins, of Newport. When first constructed, St Mark's Church was a Chapel of Ease to St George's Church, Arreton.

In 1924, St Marks Church joined with St Edmund's Church of Wootton to form the single parish of Wootton.

For the early years of WW2, the church was requisitioned for use by the local ARP wardens, when the building was handed back to the church authorities, it was found to be in need of refurbishment which the church could not fund. The contents of the church were removed and donated to other churches, the building was then leased to Pickfords and used as a furniture store.

Following the efforts of a new Rector in 1969, the church was reestablished, to re-furnish the church contributions were received from various sources.

The burial ground at the old St Michael's & All Angels' Mission Church continued to be used.
