Somerton Airfield

From Wightpedia

In 1916 J. Samuel White & Co. Ltd. purchased land at Northwood, Isle of Wight to use as an airfield for their aircraft built in their factory to the east of Newport Road.

In 1919 White's ceased to have involvement with aircraft and the airfield was acquired by S.E. Saunders in the mid 1920's.

During WW2 the airfield was extended by closing Three Gates Road; the road was reopened 1948[1] which reduced the size of the airfield and the size of aircraft which could use it.

By the early 1950's aircraft operations had ceased; in the late 1950's the site was acquired by Decca Radar for development and manufacture of their products.
