MV Volkerak, shipwreck, March 1951

MV Volkerak was a Dutch Motor Coaster of 337 tons built in 1904 and sunk off the Isle of Wight in 1951.

On the 15th March 1951 when en-route from Fowey, Cornwall to Amsterdam with a cargo of china clay she encountered thick fog and ran aground in Chale Bay to the west of Rocken End and was a total loss.

The crew were saved.

On the 22nd December 1952 the MV Albatros, a wooden Dutch Motor Coaster ran into the wreck of the MV Volkerak and was itself a total loss.
