MTE Drinking Fountain/Trough, Freshwater

Previously located next to the bus stop, lower down Gate Lane, the trough was re-positioned in 2015 to the grass on the west side of Gate Lane (near the junction with Bay Road). The 'trough' is no longer connected for water but obviously was designed to act as a house trough, a 'dog bowl' and drinking fountain. On the side is the inscription:

IN MEMORIAM M.T.E.

A report of the Freshwater Parish Council in the IW County Press 15 July 1899 records that Mrs. M. Temple Ellis had made the offer of erecting a granite horse trough which was 'very much needed on the cab-stand between Freshwater Bay and Dimbola'.
