Lower Shide Mill - 1896 map

The Lower Shide Watermill stood on the River Medina between Upper Shide and Pan Watermills. The mill was positioned to the east of Shide railway station, a spur line ran across the mill yard and under Pan Lane into the chalk pit on the side of St. Georges Down - this line enabled chalk to be transported to the Cement Works on the west side of the River Medina.

After the mill ceased to operate, the mill was used as a depot for the Isle of Wight River and Water Authority.

All signs of the mill were removed when St. George's Way was constructed from Shide into Newport in the mid 1980's - at the same time the river was moved to west of the old railway line.
