Windcliffe gate pillars

On the south side of St. Catherine's Road, leading from Niton, Isle of Wight to the lighthouse, stand a pair of substantial stone gate pillars across a track at the entrance to footpath 40, but the track apparently leads nowhere.

In the early 1830's there were plans to build Windcliff Manor (later 'Windcliffe) to the south of the road and this pair of gate pillars, now grade 2 listed, were the first part of construction.

However, before work could be started on the house itself, it was decided that a better position was to the north of the road, south of the Blackgang road (now, the Old Blackgang road), and the gate pillars remain the only evidence of the original plans.
