Standing within the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Niton stand a memorial to Edward Edwards, (1812-1886), who was an important figure in establishing free libraries in the UK.

Despite his important work, Edward Edwards ended his life living in poverty in Niton and was buried in an unmarked grave until 1902 when his biographer,Thomas Greenwood, erected the monument over the grave[1].
