Clock Tower and Drinking Fountain, Shanklin Esplanade

The clock tower on Shanklin, Isle of Wight esplanade was erected to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

The foundation stone was laid by the lady of Shanklin Manor (Mrs. White-Popham) on 5th April 1899. At that time the cost was estimated at about £200, of which £150 had been so far raised[1].

On the seaward side is a plaque reading:

THIS CLOCK TOWER WAS PAID BY

LORD OF THE MANOR AND
THE INHABITANTS OF SHANKLIN
TO COMMEMORATE THE
DIAMOND JUBILEE OF
QUEEN VICTORIA 1897

On the road side of the tower is another plaque which reads:

THIS PLAQUE WAS UNVEILED
BY THE MAYOR OF SHANKLIN
TO COMMEMORATE THE
DIAMOND JUBILEE OF
HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II
2012

A drinking fountain is incorporated on the southern face.
