The Congregational Church, sometimes referred to as 'Independant' does not have an over-arching body of authority, each congregation was independent to control its own affairs.
In 1972, there was a move to merge Congregational churches with the Presbyterian Church of England to form the United Reformed Church (URC).
Being independent, not each church joined the United Reformed Church movement.
