1859 White's Directory - Brading Parish - 'About 1784, immense beds of fine oysters were discovered in the haven, and for some time they supplied a rich harvest to great numbers of fishermen, who came in their boats from all parts of the south coast of England.'

The St Helens Oyster Fishery late 1800's operated the oyster beds at St Helens
