Saltworks, Newtown

Newtown salt pans
Newtown Salt Pans (1810/11)

Saltworks existed around Newtown Creek from Norman times - in the 17th centuary there were 7 saltworks in operation, by the time production ceased in about 1880, there were only 3 remaining.

The saltpans were subsequently used as a basis for the oyster beds.
